Changelog
What's new
Every release of StillsSpace, newest first. The same notes the app shows after an update.
v0.16
Deutsch, hot folders and more room
- StillsSpace speaks German: it follows your system language, or pick English or Deutsch in Settings → App.
- Library: your folders are watched. Scans you add to one show up by themselves, and deleted ones leave the Library. A roll's scans folder linked in Frames or Rolls is added on its own.
- Timer: write notes into the recipe while you develop, so the next roll starts with what you learned.
- Rolls: select several rolls and delete them at once (with undo). Library: Space closes the preview again, wherever you clicked in it.
- More room for your work: each page's title and buttons moved up into the title bar, and ⌘B (or the button next to the app name) shrinks the sidebar to icons.
- Library: images on an unplugged drive show as Offline with their thumbnail intact, instead of looking deleted; find them with is:offline. Folders deleted from your disk are listed in their own Missing group.
- Safer with your files: Metadata never changes camera RAW files, sidecars and XMP that Lightroom or Camera Raw also edited are left alone, Finder tags survive edits, and the Editor keeps a TIFF scan's DPI.
- Editor: the images next to the one you're on open in the background, so stepping through a roll doesn't wait, and a spinner shows while a big scan opens.
- Library: grid cells pulse until their thumbnail arrives, thumbnail progress shows as soon as the run starts, and very large scans get thumbnails too.
- Fixes: unplugged Windows drives and network shares show as offline instead of missing, a drive that comes back is online right away, a memory card remounted under a new name (like Untitled 1) is followed, roll numbers are never reused, ⌘K and new forms start in the first field, and Frames shows shutter speeds like 0.6 s correctly.
v0.15
Big libraries, no waiting
- Library: thumbnails are made in the background after you add scans, with progress in the status bar, so scrolling never waits for them. A run cut short by quitting picks up where it stopped.
- Library: opening, scrolling and selecting stay quick with tens of thousands of images; clicking an image no longer lags.
- Library: images whose file has vanished are shown faded, and files in an unplugged folder are flagged; Show in Finder on a missing file says so and rescans its folder.
v0.14
Less scrolling
- Sidebars are shorter: details fold into sections that stay open or closed as you left them, and empty fields are hidden.
- Rolls: a back arrow, Edit, Print, Delete and Show in Library sit at the top of a roll; the overview starts with what's in your cameras and which film to use first.
- Frames: lens, exposure and place are set in the sidebar, the roll fits on one line, and frames you changed but haven't written yet are marked Unsaved.
- Library: Preview, Show in Finder, Hide and Write to XMP are icons by the file name, and one Send to menu replaces four buttons.
- Settings: Edit and Delete are at the top of every sidebar; maintenance and film prices fold away.
- Settings → General fits on one screen: two columns, with the long explanations behind an ⓘ.
- Editor: Save sits in the title bar, Original, Clipping and 100 % are icons, where to save moved to Export, and sidebar sections fold away. Sliders take one line each with a value you can type into, Tone is split into Basic and Color, and Auto levels, B&W and Invert are toggle buttons.
- Editor presets: built-in Light, Look and Negative presets next to yours; hover one to preview it on the picture, and the one in use is highlighted.
- Stats: rolls shot and money spent compared with the year before, rolls per year under All time, prices as amounts, and Keepers by lens uses your lens names.
- Today is a dashboard: what needs you, your roll pipeline, frames left in each camera, a countdown to your next trip, film in stock and photos from this day in earlier years, with sunrise, sunset and golden hour on top.
- Today: mark a roll shot, developed or scanned right from its line, and right-click a line to hide it for a week, a month or for good.
- A new welcome tour on a strip of film: pick a theme, add your camera and choose your tools as you go, then start with sample data or your own first roll (Help → Welcome Tour).
v0.13
Feels native
- Library: drag images out to Finder, Mail or any other app.
- Library: Space opens the preview right away and zooms it from its thumbnail.
- Library: switching tools and back keeps your images, selection and scroll position.
- Library: pin albums and smart albums to the top (right-click → Pin to top).
- Library map: color by roll or trip; click the legend to show only one.
- Rolls: fill a range of frames in shot notes at once.
- Frames: carry exposure forward, take dates from the files, and export the roll as a contact sheet (PDF or JPEG).
- Today: reminders when film expires, a roll sits 30 days in the camera, chemistry gets old or gear is due (Settings → App).
- Open JPEG, PNG and TIFF with StillsSpace to edit them in the Editor.
- Batch progress shows on the dock or taskbar icon, and Reduce Motion is respected.
v0.12
Ready for the beta
- Try StillsSpace free for 14 days of use: only the days you open it count. Afterwards it's read-only until you enter a license key, and you can still view and export everything.
- Enter a license key on the first start or in Settings → General; Buy a license opens the website.
- Export your data (Settings → General): gear, rolls, recipes and places as JSON, the Library as a database and as a spreadsheet (library.csv).
- Suggest a feature from the status bar (💡), the Help menu or ⌘K.
- Share a recipe, film stock or Editor preset with the community; good ones become built-in presets.
- Tools and Settings now switch at the top of the sidebar.
- Editor: a filmstrip of the open images at the bottom, with a dot on edited ones.
- Library: press C again to close compare.
- Stats count pictures per camera and lens correctly, including lenses set in Frames.
v0.11
Image Studio
- Image Studio (Tools → Files): crop, turn, flip and straighten JPEG, PNG and TIFF, or draw along the horizon.
- Crop to film formats: 35mm, 6×4.5, 6×6, 6×7, 4×5 and XPan, in portrait or landscape.
- Turn scanned negatives positive; for color negatives, click the film base to remove the orange mask.
- Brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, black & white and auto levels, with a histogram and clipping warning (J).
- Hold \ to compare with the original, Z to check sharpness and dust at 100 %, ⌘Z to undo.
- Borders, tone presets, copy and paste an edit, and Save all for a whole roll.
- Saves a copy by default, keeping EXIF and the color profile; originals are only changed after asking, with a backup.
v0.10
Feels at home
- A real menu bar: File, Edit, Go, Window and Help, with the shortcuts you know.
- About, What's New and a keyboard shortcuts sheet (⌘/).
- A short welcome tour on the first start; Help → Welcome Tour brings it back.
- Film storage: shelf, fridge or freezer per roll; cold film warns later and reminds you to let it warm up.
- Trips: group rolls into trips and find their scans in Archive with trip:.
- Scanning notes per film stock, shown in Contact Sheet when you pick a roll of it.
- Print canister labels and negative sleeve index sheets from Film Log.
v0.9
TIFF scans first-class
- Big scanner TIFFs open fast: only their tags are read, not the image data.
- Archive ratings and tags can be written into a TIFF's XMP.
v0.8
Connected
- Films, cameras and lenses in Yearbook open the Archive filtered.
- Light Meter knows the loaded roll and logs exposures as shot notes.
- Write Archive ratings and tags to XMP for JPEG and RAW sidecars.
- Workbench reminds you to link and rate recently scanned rolls.
v0.7
Everything in view
- Workbench: expiring film, rolls to develop, chemistry and gear due, in one list.
- Maintenance reminders, zone placement, bellows factor and side-by-side compare.
